By the end of 2022 our cyber community had been rocked by the continuous rise in global threats and the big breach nightmare experienced by Medibank and Optus which exposed the personal information of millions of Australians. Incidents at MyDeal, Vinomofo, EnergyAustralia, Telstra and Queensland University of Technology followed. In the end, the country claimed an unwelcome honour: researchers found it had one of the highest data breach densities in the world.
Combined with the unrelenting and always evolving threat landscape is the chronic skills shortage across the industry, resulting in burnout and mental health challenges for cyber professionals. To become more cyber resilient requires a holistic approach: from stopping malicious actors entering your network through having great defense technologies; to ensuring staff are always on alert for suspicious communications and play their role in protecting the organisation; to having a well-documented and tested response plan to allow business continuity during an incident; and to looking after ourselves and each other. In the pages that follow you will see insights from Mimecast’s Co-founder Peter Bauer as well as APAC cyber leaders who form part of our Customer Advisory Board and local industry experts. While there is no silver bullet to stopping cybercrime these stories are designed to help guide you in your cyber resilience journey. I hope you enjoy the magazine.
